29th November 2011, Supercells, Bathurst - Parkes, NSW

This day could have gone a lot worse. Conditions were quite potent for the formation of supercells across the Central West Slopes and Plains and Central Tablelands.  So good was the potential that there were several crews of chasers out, however unlike the USA the chasers here were spread many hours apart. We started the day at Wellington. Nothing happened until 1.20pm when a weak cell developed overhead before dropping into  unchasable country (no roads).  Trailing this cell was risking as it took us away from the plains and onto the table lands.

The second video below is from one of the chase partners for the day. http://www.youtube.com/user/pingtang666. Watch towards the end for a transformer flash as lightning hits lines.

Our decision to follow crap onto tablelands looked risky, but skies cleared and in the strong sun a cell exploded north of Bathurst. It produced this impressive overshoot.

As we finally get near the cell murphy's law dictated that it should weaken, but still putting down as obvious hail shaft.

After the decay of the Bathurst supercell we noted that the lightning tracker was showing some solid fast moving cells to our west / north west, about 150-200kms. These cells were moving quickly so we knew an intercept on dark was possible so we headed west. I do not have photos but as we drove west into the twilight we could see a massive updraft, and later as the daylight faded a majestic show of lightning. We caught up with this cell near the town of Parkes. Another chaser has a photo that clearly shows supercell structure, they also recorded very large 5-6cm hail.

As the cells moves east of us they decayed, but put on anvil crawlers
