SIGNIFICANT ILLAWARRA WEATHER EVENTS - 1984


3th July 1984 - Only a 9C maximum. (Snow on Northern Tablelands)

4th July 1984 - Snow on Illawarra Escarpment. 3-6 ins deep at Robertson. Very deep low in Tasman Sea generating SW-S winds to 40 knots. A maximum of 11C in the Illawarra with rain all day, a 4C minimum. ( Snow extended to Stanthorpe in Queensland ).

5th July 1984 - Seas to 20ft ( 5-6 metres ) on offshore reefs and Islands near Port Kembla.

28th July 1984 - Gale force west winds cause damage.

( 10th August 1984 ) - Tornado at Gosford

8th November 1984 - Thunderstorms resulting in up to100mm ( 4 ins ) of rain in Illawarra. Storms associated with low pressure to north and were very slow moving. ( Flash floods had occurred in Sydney where Turramurra received 100mm in 1 hour ).

11th November 1984 - Severe storm at home ( Mt Warrigal ) at 6.30pm with hail and strong gust front.

31st December 1984- Ex-Tropical Cyclone Monica moved into NE Tasman generating at 4-5m ( 15ft ) surf in Illawarra.
